The brand new Statewide Independent Wholesalers (SIW) Distribution Centre celebrated its official opening on 31 May 2012 with a VIP ceremony, commencing at 1pm, with guest of honour Lara Giddings, Premier of Tasmania.
Located south of Launceston at Western Junction, the $80 million centre brings cutting edge logistics technology to Tasmania, delivering fresher, faster groceries throughout Tasmania to 180 independent retailers, 29 Woolworths Stores and 25 BWS stores right across the state. SIW is a unique and highly collaborative joint venture between Woolworths and Tasmanian Independent Retailers.
With 300 employees, 110 truck movements a day, and 410,000 cartons picked per week, the centre will house more than $40 million of stock at any one time, from around 900 suppliers. It utilises best practice systems such as voice pick technology and radio frequency receiving and despatch.
SIW Chairman Michael Kent said: “We are thrilled to finally open this amazing facility. It represents a substantial investment in the future of Tasmania and will help service the needs of supermarket customers in the state for many years to come.”
Tasmanian Independent Retailers Chairman , Peter Aulich also said” It is really great to see the project come to fruition after many years of planning and hard work. The outcome of a world class facility to service our customers is something Tasmanians should be proud of and guarantees our source of supply for many years to come.
