Independents Welcome ACCC Review of Grocery Pricing
Tasmanian Independent Retailers has welcomed the announcements by the Hon Chris Bowen, Assistant Treasurer & Minister for Competition Policy & Consumers Affairs of a comprehensive review by the ACCC into grocery prices.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the ACCC to take a fresh approach to the way it conducts such inquiries under the Rudd Government," TIR Chief Executive Officer, Grant Hinchcliffe said.

"The matters listed to be considered as part of this review are broadly focused and should enable the ACCC to undertake a thorough review of the grocery industry and to ensure that the Australian public is getting a fair deal at the supermarket checkout.

"Tasmanian Independent Retailers is especially pleased that the review will consider the nature of competition in the retail grocery industry, which should include issues such as the market domination of Coles and Woolworths who collectively control 80% of the grocery market.

"The consideration of the impact of such domination should not only examine retail grocery prices but also the ability of the independent sector to compete effectively against the chain supermarket on a fair and level playing field, especially in states such as Tasmania."

Mr Hinchcliffe said after many years of calling on successive Governments for such an inquiry, it was gratifying to see that the new Rudd Government had come good on its word.

"The question will then be if the Government does anything about the issues raised in the review, however at this stage it is a good first step," Mr Hinchcliffe said.

Tasmanian Independent Retailers will participate in the inquiry via its national representative body, NARGA (National Association of Retail Grocers of Australia).

TIR is a cooperative, which represents over 120 stores in Tasmania operating under the Festival IGA, Supa IGA, Value Plus IGA and Friendly Grocer IGA banners.
